2012 iPad has 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM

Takeaway: Apple doubled the amount of RAM in the 2012 iPad and added a quad-core GPU, but left the CPU clock speed unchanged at 1GHz.

New details have emerged about the 2012 iPad's hardware specs. The folks at Tinhte.vn, a Vietnamese tech blog, appear to have gotten their hands on a 2012 iPad Wi-Fi 4G 16GB White (model A1430). The group has posted an unboxing gallery and video (Google translation). They've also run a few benchmark tests (Google translation).

If Tinhte.vn does have a 2012 iPad and their tests are accurate, the tablet's new A5X SoC has a processor with the same 1GHz clock speed as the iPad 2's A5 SoC. As I wrote last week, the A5X likely contains a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and a quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU (an upgrade from the iPad 2's PowerVR SGX543MP2).

Apple also appears to have added more RAM to the 2012 iPad. Using Geekbench 2, a benchmarking app from Primate Labs, Tinhte.vn found that the 2012 iPad has 1GB RAM (988MB as reported by Geekbench 2), compared to the iPad 2's 512MB.

I'll be cracking open the new iPad this Friday (launch day), so stay tuned.
